USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity [ERICCA]
The overall goal of the USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity [ERICCA] is to help establish the Makerere University (MAK) Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI) as a recognized national and regional hub of academic, professional development and research excellence in Climate science, Climate adaptation, and related disciplines.
The Activity has strategically deployed human, financial and technology resources with the target continually focused on building Ugandan capacity and proficiency to address climate adaptation and related issues. More specifically, the Activity is mobilizing leading academics, scientists, and researchers to work side-by-side and in partnership with Ugandan colleagues to build upon the foundation efforts made by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and others to date in developing and establishing MUCCRI. MUCCRI is a fully functional, operational, and sustainable center within MAK/CAES and has encouraged campus wide participation in climate change awareness activities.The Centre has now the requisite staff, know how, capacity, and resources to be a sought-after location to focus and support Climate and Climate adaptation education and research for the benefit of the University and the Nation.
ERICCA's Partnership with MUCCRI To help prepare both society, in general, and the agricultural sector, specifically, to adapt to some of the growing risks from a changing climate. The USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity is focused on helping Ugandans to build a hub of academic, professional development, and research excellence in climate science, climate adaptation, and related disciplines. This hub is being developed through support to the Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI).
MUCCRI is seen as one of the crucial responses to the country-wide and East Africa regional need for a well-known location for climate change research, information, innovations, training, and outreach. This USAID partnership with Makerere University aims to:
- Transform MUCCRI into a leading centre for climate change education and research in Africa;
- Develop the capacity of university staff, government officials, civil society, and private sector actors to better understand climate change, climate change impacts, and climate adaptation;
- Improve and support undergraduate, graduate, diploma, and post graduate education in climate science, meteorology, and climate adaptation; and
- Conduct and disseminate climate change, climate change impacts, and adaptation research and field trials for the agricultural sector.
